SENIORS CENTRES

Alberta Association of Seniors Centres has been please to contribute to the Grey Matters 2013 Conference agenda.  Here are some of the conference activities that should be of interest of Alberta’s seniors centres and organizations.

SENIORS CENTRE CAPACITY STUDY - (an update)

Jason Daniels, PhDMs.Kyle Whitfield Ph.DThis is a joint project of AASC, Alberta Health, and the University of Alberta (Faculty of Extension) that began in January 2013. The study is called “Examining Seniors’ Centres in Alberta as Centers of Excellence: Identifying their Needs and Capacities.”
   Researchers Dr. Kyle Whitfield and Dr. Jason Daniels will report on preliminary findings. Analyzed results of a survey of the current status of Alberta Seniors Centres will be presented, as will preliminary insights generated from visits to representative seniors centres where focus group and individual interviews with users of seniors centres are taking place.

SENIORS CENTRE CAPACITY STUDY – Hospitality Suite to get YOUR Input

Dr. Whitfield and Daniels will be at a hospitality suite during the two days of the Grey Matters 2013 Conference.  Those representing seniors centres and others with concerns and ideas for the future of seniors centres are asked to visit this room during the course of the conference, and complete a survey about their seniors centre (if this has not been done already) and talk to the Researchers about ideas that need to be considered. Because seniors centres in Alberta are potentially centres of excellence and central to sustaining and growing a model of successful aging in the province, providing your input is essential.

WOW-A New TV for your Centre!
All senior centres who attend this suite AND ensure their centre’s “study survey” is completed (by either management staff or Board Members), will be entered into a draw to win for their centre a new 47” Flat Screen, HD TV valued at $750. Make sure you visit this Hospitality Suite and maybe take a new TV home for your centre. Your odds of winning are very good.

The Value of RECREATION & SOCIALIZATION in Seniors Wellness – The Alberta 55 Plus Games

This concurrent workshop will be presented jointly by the Alberta Sport Recreation Parks & Wildlife Foundation, and the Alberta 55 Plus Association.   The session will address how the Foundation’s programs, like the Alberta 55 Plus Games system, supports recreation and active living, and contributes to:

  • enhanced quality of life, health, and self-reliance;
  • community volunteerism, organizations,  and leadership opportunities for seniors; and
  • Alberta’s social and physical environments in support of active lifestyle choices for individuals, families, organizations and communities.

The session will provide information on the Grant Programs of the Foundation, funded by Alberta Lotteries.  The session will also address how the Alberta 55 Plus Association, and its regional zone partners, work with seniors organizations in the delivery of both Winter and Summer Games (held every other year in Alberta).  Attendees will leave this session with a better understanding of the Alberta 55 Plus Games, and how they work with supporting organizations to sustain healthy lifestyles, prevent chronic disease, and reduce public health care cost.

CARING FOR THE WHOLE PERSON – A Case Management Approach

Seniors sometimes come to service providers for assistance and relate the symptoms they are experiencing, rather than the deeper challenges they are facing.  This presentation will discuss a holistic, case management style of practice.  Looking at it from a strength-based perspective, this presentation will share tools that assist in identifying the issues.
